The basic organisation no. 01/68 of the Czech Union for Nature Conservation was originally aimed at the protection of herpetofauna, but its activities have gradually spread into other fields.
In 1984 our members proposed the conception of the bioindication monitoring of Prague's environment, which we have been conducting since then for the City Information System of Prague.
We have created the video studio Recognize and Protect, which produces educational programmes about nature and its conservation.
We ensure continual observing of the critically endangered Aesculapian Snake (Zamenis longissimus) at its only and insulated Czech habitat and manage its gene resource area, which has been declared as a nature reserve as a result of our initiative.
In the area of Prague we manage the city's most valuable nature reserve Divoká Šárka.
We organise help to endangered species in our country as well as abroad, especially in Slovakia and Croatia, where our activities have been several times evaluated by diplomas of the Institute for Nature Conservation, Croatian Nature Association and its section of the Young Nature Guards (Maldi čuvari prirode).
Nowadays a programme for saving the rarest, critically endangered species of the reptiles living in that country - the Balkan Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata) - is in progress, according to our project in the cooperation with the Natural History Museum of Croatia.
We cooperate with Croatia in the field of making educational video programmes as well and prepare various happenings together (i.e. the Cantata Ecologica Festival, exhibitions, the demonstrative freeing of the Hermann's Tortoises (Testudo hermanni) ilegally brought to our country from Croatia by tourists - Testudo Action).
The members of the basic organisation are instructors, tutors, and advisors in all activities of our Ecocentre, founded by our basic organisation for the purpose of ecological education of the youth.
We are also involved in many exhibition, publication and lecture activities in the Czech Republic as well as abroad.
